  • Scientific Name: Malpighia emarginata
  • Common Names: Barbados Cherry, Acerola Cherry, West Indian Cherry
  • Family: Malpighiaceae
  • Origin: Native to the Caribbean, Central America, and parts of South America.
  • Appearance: It’s a small, evergreen shrub or small tree, growing up to 3 meters (10 feet) tall. The leaves are oval, glossy, and dark green. The flowers are small, pink, and clustered, followed by the distinctive cherries.

  • Rich in Vitamin C: It’s renowned for boosting the immune system, fighting oxidative stress, and helping with collagen production.
  • Antioxidant Properties: Contains compounds like flavonoids and carotenoids which may help reduce inflammation and protect cells.

Growing Conditions

  • Climate: Prefers tropical and subtropical climates. It thrives in temperatures between 60°F (15°C) and 90°F (32°C).
  • Soil: Well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soil (pH 5.5–6.5) is best. It can tolerate poor soil, but it will grow better with regular watering and good drainage.
  • Sunlight: Full sun is ideal for growing Barbados Cherry.
  • Watering: Regular watering is essential, especially during dry periods. However, it doesn’t like waterlogged soil.
  • Pruning: Pruning the shrub can encourage a bushier shape and more fruit production.

  • Culinary: The fruit can be eaten fresh, but due to its tartness, it is often used in making juices, jams, jellies, sauces, and smoothies.
