Mexican Redbud

The Mexican Redbud (Cercis canadensis var. mexicana) is a striking and hardy tree known for its beautiful, vibrant pink flowers and distinctive heart-shaped leaves.
General Description
- Family: Fabaceae (Pea family)
- Type: Deciduous tree
- Height: Typically 15 to 20 feet tall, sometimes up to 25 feet.
- Spread: 12 to 15 feet wide
- Flowers: Bright magenta or deep pink, appearing in early spring (March-April) before the leaves emerge.
- Leaves: Heart-shaped, dark green, turning yellow or orange in fall.
- Bark: Smooth to slightly ridged, grayish-brown when young, darkening as the tree matures.
- Fruit: Flat, brown seed pods that mature in the fall.
Planting and Care
- Planting Time: Best planted in early spring or fall.
- Planting Location: Choose a spot with enough room for it to grow both in height and spread. Avoid planting too close to buildings or other trees.
- Pruning: Minimal pruning is required, but you can remove any dead or crossing branches in late winter before new growth starts. If you want to shape it or reduce its size, prune it after the flowers have bloomed.
- Fertilization: Use a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in spring for better growth, but avoid over-fertilizing as it can affect the blooming.
- Pests/Diseases: Generally pest-resistant, but watch out for aphids or scale. It can also occasionally be susceptible to rust and powdery mildew.

- Ornamental Tree: Known for its stunning spring bloom and attractive heart-shaped leaves, it’s often used in gardens, parks, and streetscapes.
- Wildlife: Attracts bees, butterflies, and birds. The flowers provide nectar for pollinators.

- Drought Tolerance: Once established, the Mexican Redbud is somewhat drought-tolerant, though it benefits from occasional deep watering.
- Resistant to Urban Pollution: It can handle urban environments better than many other trees, making it ideal for cities.
- Mulching: Mulch around the base to conserve moisture and keep weeds at bay, but avoid piling mulch directly against the trunk.
