Anacua

The Anacua, scientifically known as Ehretia anacua, is a small to medium-sized tree native to the southwestern United States and northern Mexico, particularly found in Texas. It’s also commonly referred to as “Anacua” or “Texas ebony” in some areas, though this latter name can sometimes be confused with the true ebony tree (Diospyros species).

  • Common Names: Anacua, Texas Ironwood (occasionally), Anacua tree, and sometimes called “Anacua Bush” in shrubby forms.

Growth Requirements

  • Watering: Anacuas are drought-tolerant once established but benefit from occasional watering during extended dry periods. Over-watering should be avoided.
  • Soil: Prefers well-draining soil but is adaptable to various soil types, including clay, loam, or sandy soils.
  • Sunlight: Full sun to partial shade is ideal for healthy growth.
  • Hardiness: Hardy in USDA zones 8-11, withstanding heat and mild frost.

  • Drought Tolerance: Once established, the Anacua requires little water, making it ideal for low-water landscaping.
  • Wildlife Support: Its flowers attract pollinators, and its fruits serve as a food source for birds and other wildlife.

Common Problems

  • Pests: Anacuas may be susceptible to common tree pests such as aphids or scale insects, but generally, they are pest-resistant.
  • Diseases: Fungal infections and root rot can occur in poorly-draining soil.
