Growing Conditions

  • Sunlight: Prefers full sun but can tolerate some shade.
  • Soil: Xylosma prefers well-draining soil, with slightly acidic to neutral pH. It’s adaptable to a variety of soil types but does best in fertile, loamy soils.
  • Watering: This plant prefers moderate watering. It’s drought-tolerant once established but will do best with consistent moisture during its growth period. However, it doesn’t like “wet feet” (so avoid waterlogged soil).
  • Temperature: Xylosma is relatively heat-tolerant but is better suited for USDA Hardiness Zones 9-11. It doesn’t tolerate frost well and should be protected from freezing temperatures.

Uses in Landscaping

  • Hedge or Screen: Due to its dense foliage, Xylosma is often used as a privacy hedge or screening plant. It can be pruned to maintain a compact shape.
  • Foundation Planting: It works well in foundation planting because of its bushy, evergreen nature.
  • Low-maintenance: Once established, Xylosma requires little care, making it ideal for low-maintenance landscaping projects.
